How to Reduce Image Size Using MS Paint – A Simple Guide
Reducing image size is essential for various reasons, including faster uploads, efficient emailing, or meeting file size restrictions for online forms. While there are numerous tools available, Windows users can easily reduce image size using the default MS Paint application. This guide will show you step-by-step how to compress images using Paint.
In this example, we'll be reducing the size of a 6MB image file using MS Paint.
Step 1: Open the Image in Paint
First, locate the image file you want to resize. Right-click on the image and choose "Edit" to open the image in MS Paint. If the "Edit" option is unavailable, select "Open with" and choose MS Paint from the list of programs.
Step 2: Use the Resize Tool
With the image open in MS Paint, navigate to the "Home" tab and locate the "Resize" tool. This tool allows you to reduce the dimensions of your image.
Step 3: Adjust the Image Size
In the "Resize and Skew" dialog box, ensure the "Maintain aspect ratio" box is checked to avoid distorting the image. Under "Resize by," select "Percentage" and enter the desired percentage. For example, reducing by 50% will halve the dimensions of the image.
For this tutorial, we will reduce the image size to 18%. Once you've entered the percentage, click "OK" to apply the changes.
Step 4: Save the Compressed Image
After resizing, it's time to save the image. Go to "File" > "Save As" > "JPEG Picture." Select the destination folder where you want to save the reduced image.
Results: File Size Comparison
Here are the results after reducing the image size. The original 6MB image was reduced to 310KB and, after further compression, down to 53KB. You can click on the images below to see the size differences:
